The Bold and the Beautiful

(about the show) (history) (famous alumni)

The Bold and the Beautiful was created in 1987 as was known as its sister show to the Young and the Restless on CBS. In the late 80’s most soap operas had already transitioned to the new 60-minute format but then CBS introduced the 30 minute Bold and the Beautiful to offer viewers a quality soap but who had less time to commit to a daily TV show. The Bold and the Beautiful also broke the barriers by being the first one of its time to also broadcast in Spanish so that they could further expand their target viewing audience. When the show first aired it was apparent to viewers that the show would primarily revolve around a single family, the Forresters. Unlike other soaps, they typically had at least a couple different families to focus on. The writers of the Bold and the Beautiful, William and Ted Bell, decided that they would solely focus on one family so that they could go deeply into each character. What that meant was that the characters where pivotal to the success of the show. The Forrester family is made up of Stephanie and Eric Forrester who were dedicated and motivated to start their own Fashion Company, so they moved to Los Angeles and got married when Stephanie found out that she was pregnant. The couple went on to have four children Ridge, Thorne, Kristen, and Felicia. The Bold and the Beautiful follows the lives of the family through marriages, divorces, deaths, and births. Forrester creations main rivalry was Spectra Fashions, which for obvious reasons sparked a feud with the two families as well. The Bold and the Beautiful’s focus on one or two families have made long term veterans of the show. Susan Flannery (Stephanie Foster), John McCook (Eric Foster), Ron Moss (Ridge Foster), and Katherine Kelly Lane (Brooke Foster) have all been on the show since creation. This tight group of veterans really gives the show a realistic tone as the characters grow inside and outside of the show. Overall the Bold and the Beautiful has enjoyed tremendous success, especially while having the second highest Nielson rating to date for its timeslot. The show has clutched many Daytime Emmy awards especially in the Outstanding performance for a young actress or actor This just goes to show that the Bold and the Beautiful keeps evolving as the initial cast members keep the base of the show going strong. Overall the Bold and the Beautiful has offered viewers a different approach to soap operas being a 30-minute program as well as offering cast members who offer and fresh and bold take on soap operas in general. Since the Bold and the Beautiful is considered the Young and the Restless’ “little sister” there are many crossovers between the two shows. This really allows the characters to interact with one another as well as sparking interest with viewers as to what the two different shows offer together and apart.
