The creators of The Young and the Restless are William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, who found a home at CBS in 1973. The shows original format was a 30-minute segment that developed into a full 60-minute program in 1980. This 30-minute format was called “Live to Tape” which meant that the characters froze on set when commercials were supposed to be airing and they would continue to act when the camera’s started rolling. When the 60-minute format was introduced the creators also changed the style to taping a shot by shot scene where edits any other visual stimulators could be introduced. The creators of The Young and the Restless decided that The Young and the Restless was going to differentiate itself from other soaps on different networks. They played with different lighting techniques that really allowed the tone and mood of the show to be conveyed in the homes of its viewers. The Young and the Restless cast and crew also decided that it would make sure that the set was immaculate typically involving fresh flowers and dramatic sets. The Young and the Restless also played with different types of wardrobes and hairstyles to satisfy trends and involve a whole different persona into each and every character. The Young and the Restless is the only soap opera to successfully replace its original cast members with new ones as different families have left and entered the show through the brilliant writing of the shows creative talent. The show first aired in a fictional town in Wisconsin called, Genoa City. The families first followed on the show was the rich Brooks family and the not so rich Foster family. These two families lasted on the Young and the Restless until the early 80’s where most characters were written off and two new families were introduced, the Abbots and the Newman’s. The Abbots and the Newman’s have been featured on the show since the early eighties and continue to play an integral part in the show’s plots. The ongoing feud of Jill Foster Abbott and Katherine Chancellor has been going on for many years and is America’s long lasting feud of any soap opera to date. Since the original cast was written out of the show, there have been many different families over the years that have caused trouble for Genoa City, WI. Over the years there has been many shakeup in the cosmetic industry of the fictional town, which has allowed many different plots to evolve over the years. Historically the Young and the Restless aired around the noon timeslot. However in recent years The Young and the Restless was moved to the 4pm time slot which was thought to transition seamlessly into the 5 o’clock new programs CBS thought. Overall The Young and the Restless has outlasted many other soaps that seemed to diminish when characters would be written off, however this is not the case. The Young and the Restless has been a staple on the daytime lineup for CBS, and will continue to do so for years to come.
