All My Children

All My Children is an American soap opera and drama filmed on the ABC network. It was created by Agnes Nixon and first aired on January 5th, 1970. The show is set in the fictional town of Pine Valley, Pennsylvania. Two characters that have been on the show since the very first episode and are most notably know for the show are Susan Lucci and Ray MacDonnell. The show, like many others in the70’s started off being 30 minutes long. All My Children was also one of the first soaps to use FilmLook, a postproduction process that makes the show looked more filmed and less taped. This format helped All My Children become what it is today and what helps it to stand out among the rest. There is no question that All My Children has stood up against the test of time. Nixon set out to create a soap opera that would address the most current and controversial issues to date. He also wanted to create and avenue where he could inject humor and fun into everyday life of the characters portrayed on the show. In the beginning credits of All My Children, the notably poem that Nixon wrote has been apparent on the show since the very creation subjecting viewers to the tone and atmosphere that he wants to portray from the very start of the show. The other way All My Children set itself apart if from telling the story of young love. Many other soap opera’s at the time focused on the intertwining of many families and businesses, however All My Children gained a tremendous following through its younger characters and innovative story lines. The show wanted to attract and attain a younger audience so they would be more inclined to follow the show for years to come. The loyalty that fans of All My Children are tremendous as it is easy to follow and catch up on without having to miss a beat. All My Children was not an instant success, as it took years to gain the audience loyalty that the show now enjoys. One of All My Children’s most topical events was injecting story lines of the Vietnam War. Never before on television had any show based a storyline around a war. All My Children also first portrayed other controversial story lines such as abortion, cosmetic surgery, & homosexuality on daytime drama. All My Children has gained a notoriety of fans through the consistent characters, storylines, and issues that are handled on a daily basis. People tune into All My Children everyday because the plots, themes, and characters are amazingly complex and deep. Susan Lucci and Erica Cane have truly carried the show all of these years and continue to do show in a very gracious and experienced manner. Not only do veterans and new characters associate flawlessly, but also there is a clear role of acceptance among the characters. Although there are rivalries between characters, nothing gets in the way of delivering an amazing and dynamic show each and everyday.
