The Young and the Restless is a Soap Opera that was first aired on CBS in 1973. Created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, Young and the Restless is based on a fictional town in Wisconsin called Genoa City, Wisconsin. When Young and the Restless first aired it was based on two main families, The Brooks and Foster Families. However, Young and the Restless is the only Soap Opera to completely write out their original cast. The show progressed by introducing the Abbots and the Newman’s who held an interactive rivalry. Both families owned a cosmetics company so a rivalry was obvious. Both Jabot Cosmetics and Newman Enterprises involved many discrepancies being involved in the same industry. There have been many more families introduce into the Young and the Restless’ plot such as the Winters, Williams, and the Fishers/Baldwin’s. However the true rival that has lasted the test of time is between Jill Foster Abbott and Katherine Chancellor. This ongoing feud has given fans many enriched plots and dramatic twists and turns in the many seasons of The Young and the Restless. Over the years, The Young and the Restless has achieved many awards including 100 daytime Emmys, and over 300 other nominations. The all-star cast makes for very dramatic play by plays as Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor) in 2008 won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In 2008, Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters) also won \"Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series\". There are many different reasons why the Young and the Restless has been so successful over the years and their cast is a major reason. In 1973 the show only aired for 30-minute segments, which lasted to 1980 where it switched to a 60-minute format. This new longer version allowed the Young and the Restless to evolve deeper into the relationships of the characters as well as show depth in the abilities of different writing styles. One of the major ways The Young and the Restless has set itself apart is by using lighting techniques to achieve a darker set. At the time of conception many other soaps were using brightly lit sets that did not accurately convey the dramatic message that the Young and the Restless did with its darker lit sets. The Young and the Restless also made sure that their set furniture, wardrobe, and hairstyles were all new and fresh which helped it to set itself apart from all the rest. Over the years The Young and the Restless has constantly set itself apart from other American soap operas which has allowed it to constantly reinvent itself and grow as a show. To this day the Young and the Restless has been a integral part of CBS’s daytime line up and continues to shake viewers with every new episode and plot. The Young and the Restless has truly lasted the test of time and will continue to spark interest within its dedicated followers, cast mates, and staff.
