Days of our Lives was created in 1965 by Ted Corday and Betty Corday along with writer Bell of The Young and the Restless. Days of Our Lives separated itself apart from the rest as it revolves around a family of doctors. Therefore most scenes, as you could imagine, take place in a hospital. As different storylines develop there are inter twining plots of love and lust as well as tragedy and medical issues. Days of Our Lives also featured a mental hospital that some of the characters worked out in which the patients would at times play a role in the underlying issues of the main characters. Days of our Lives was quickly noted by critics and the entertainment industry for stepping out of the bounds of a “normal soap opera” in that Days did not play a typically American family. The tested the waters with their controversial plots including artificial insemination and interracial dating, which spawned many discussions among viewers. Over the years Days of our Lives has altered their story lines to include somewhat more unrealistic plots that obviously had critics talking. However, currently their contract is lasting until September of 2010. When Days of our Lives first aired the show revolved around the Horton family, who sparked many issues being comprised of doctors. The show was based in fictional Salem where the lives of the character revolved around a hospital. Other families such as the DiMeras and the Bradys added for story lines, twist and turns, as well as many other shocking moments. These new families were introduced in the 80’s and were able to keep the show running in full steam. However in the 90’s when a new writer was introduced the show took a turn to the more supernatural and unrealistic as characters were coming back from the dead 3 times. However, the show managed to outstand any type of writing issues and is now back to dramatic and intense story lines. Along with many of the other soaps and the time, Days of our Lives was only 30 minutes. In 1975, the show was expanded to a full 60-minute program, which needed more characters to be casted. From creation there were 7 characters but when the show increased to its new 60-minute length it the cast list grew to 27. In 1990, there were over 40 cast mates who were involved in the intertwining story lines. Frances Reid, who plays Alice Horton, is the only cast member to be on the show since creation. However John Clarke, Suzanne Rogers, and Deidre Hall have all been on the cast for over 30 years. Days won a Daytime Emmy for best Drama in 1978 as well as a Writers Guild of America Award in 2000. Many other days actors have won concurrent and varied awards over the years for their artistic, creative, and dramatic abilities. Days of our Lives has been a long standing American Soap on NBA and has truly outlasted many others.
